What this site is

Control Plane Labs is a free web toolbox and a small editorial layer for the people who run everyone else’s infrastructure. Cloud engineers, SREs, platform teams, application security teams, and the web developers who ship the apps that all of the above keep alive.

Every tool on this site is a single-purpose utility that opens in one clean browser tab. No logins. No paywalls. No upsells. No dark patterns. If a tool can compute a result client-side, it does — nothing about your data leaves your browser unless a page explicitly says otherwise, and where a server round trip is necessary (a Certificate Transparency lookup, an HIBP breach check), we say so and explain exactly what leaves the browser and where it goes.

The editorial layer around the tools exists for one reason: to answer the question “what does this thing actually do, and when should I reach for it?” That’s a boring mission statement and we intend to keep it that way.

Why “Control Plane Labs”

The control plane is the operator-facing layer of every cloud primitive — the Kubernetes control plane, the DNS control plane, the IAM control plane, the certificate authority control plane. It is where the day-to-day decisions happen. This site is aimed squarely at the people making those decisions, or about to have to.

Editorial independence

  • Ownership. Control Plane Labs is a property of Ennis Studio, a small operator-owned company founded by Ben Ennis.
  • No pay-to-play coverage. We accept display advertising and, on rare occasions, sponsored posts labeled clearly as such. We do not accept payment in exchange for favorable editorial coverage, and no advertiser is shown a draft before publication.
  • AI-assistance disclosure. Some articles are drafted with AI assistance under a named editor who fact-checks every claim before publish. See our editorial policy for the full workflow.
  • Correction policy. If we get something wrong, we correct it in place and add a dated correction note at the bottom of the article. Silent edits are not allowed.

Bylines

Two bylines appear on this site:

  • Ben Ennis — founder of Ennis Studio and operator of CertIndex (a Certificate Transparency data API) and GuardHound (consumer domain security monitoring). Writes the opinion and pillar posts.
  • Control Plane Labs Staff — the byline used on tool explainer posts and news round-ups drafted with AI assistance and fact-checked by Ben.

Both bylines are real; anonymous bylines and pen names are not used on this site.

What we do not do

  • No exploit walkthroughs. Tools are for defensive use.
  • No adult content, no gambling content, no illegal-use framing.
  • No affiliate stuffing. If we recommend a paid product it is because we use it or have vetted it ourselves, and we say so.
  • No thin AI content. Every article on the site targets a specific keyword cluster with a real point of view, primary sources, and a working tool where one is relevant.
